CENTENARY OF THE
ANNEXATION OF HAWAI'I BY THE U.S.A.

President Sanford Ballard Dole, who helped to overthrow the Monarchy in 1893 and established the Republic of Hawai'i, had lobbied for a long time to get the U.S. to annex Hawai'i. He finally succeeded on August 12 1898. The Annexation ceremony included lowering the Hawaiian flag from the flagpole in front of the Executive Building of the Republic of Hawai'i ('Iolani Palace) & then the U.S. flag was raised in its place. The Royal Hawaiian Band played "Hawai'i Pono'i. However after a while the band was so upset that they put down their instruments and ran away. Then the USS Philadelphia Band (from a US Navy ship currently in port at that time) played the "Star Spangled Banner". President of the Republic Sanford Dole pledged allegiance to the "new country". A Ball was held in the former "Throne Room" of the 'Iolani Palace and this was followed by a fireworks display. Very few Hawaiians attended the ceremonies and most stayed away. Hawai'i was an independent country no more.

The Centenary of the Annexation is remembered on these two cacheted envelopes and one postcard with a postmark of August 12th 1998.
