On June 11th 1998, the Hawai'i Convention Center was officially opened by Governor Ben Cayetano of Hawai'i. The center was built on the old site of Aloha Motors, at the corner of Kalakaua Avenue and Kapiolani Boulevard just across the bridge from Waikiki. On the third side is the Ala Wai Canal. Architecturally it is a very attractive building with a huge glass front and well-landscaped grounds. It contains 1,100,000 square feet of floor space, is very high-tech and is designed to attract large conventions from the mainland and overseas.
